Why I Started AGEINPLACE ALLIES: A Lifetime of Service and Safety
For 28 years, I proudly served the city of Charlotte as a firefighter. During that time, I saw firsthand how quickly life can change—one moment someone is living independently, and the next, they’re in need of help. Responding to emergencies, I encountered countless seniors who struggled with mobility or had homes that weren’t equipped for their changing needs. Many times, it wasn’t the fire or the medical emergency that stuck with me—it was the realization that these seniors didn’t feel safe in their own homes.
One call in particular changed my perspective forever. We responded to a medical emergency involving an elderly woman who had fallen in her home. She lived alone and had been unable to get up for hours before help arrived. The fall wasn’t due to any outside danger—it happened because her home wasn’t equipped to support her. There were no grab bars in the bathroom, the lighting was poor, and the cluttered hallways made it hard for her to move around safely. As we assisted her, I realized how many other seniors were living in similar situations—unsafe, vulnerable, and without the support they needed.
That experience never left me.
After I retired, I knew I wanted to continue serving my community, but this time in a different way. I wanted to create a solution that would allow seniors to remain in their homes, living safely and independently, without the constant fear of falling or needing to move into assisted living. That’s why I started AGEINPLACE ALLIES. I wanted to take the lessons I learned from my years in public service and apply them to something that could make a lasting difference in people’s lives.
At AGEINPLACE ALLIES, we don’t just install ramps or widen doorways—we provide peace of mind. We help seniors stay where they feel most comfortable—at home. With my background in emergency response, I understand the importance of safety better than most, and I’m committed to ensuring that every senior has the opportunity to age in place, with the dignity and security they deserve.
